The Railways has increased the tatkal quota to 30% in some selected trains. So, instead of having one sleeper class bogie dedicated for tatkal bookings earlier, there are 3 bogies for tatkal bookings now. So, that means 144 more berths for the passengers who don’t like to plan their travel (excuse the ones who genuinely deserve the tickets). This move would surely leave a few passengers angry, but would lead to more revenues for the railways.
The Railways would gain nearly Rs.21,600 extra revenue, without requiring any major changes in operating expenditure. The seats in upper classes are also being increased. Read the report in Hindu here.
P.S: The slight decrease in fares proposed in the latest railway budget might reduce the numbers slightly.
