I am not a movie buff but for the second week in succession I have watched a movie first day first show. Last week it was Casino Royale and I came out of the theatre satisfied, but Dhoom 2 was disappointing except for the performance of Hrithik Roshan. The effects were good, the visuals stunning, but the film lacked…. Well, we’ll get to that later.

First the positives of the movie
- HRITHIK ROCKS. If there is one person who leaves a strong impression, then it has got to be Hrithik. Abhishek is good and others fill the screen more than anything else.

- Action sequences are good and taken well. There are only 3 sequences worth mentioning. The first train chase sequence (I missed the initial portion of this chase), the one in Mumbai and in Rio.
- Visuals are stunning. If you wanna watch how the beaches of Rio look on big screen, then you should watch the second half of this movie for sure.
- The movie starts very well and the first half is good.
- If Bollywood is the benchmark, then the stunts are really good and this should raise the level for other movies.
Ok, now for the story. It is another cop’s chase robber’s story. There is a cool thief, Mr. A (Hrithik) and he is being pursued by ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek). Ali (Uday Chopra) has become a sub-inspector in this movie and is Jai’s right hand man. Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) is also in the police department and helps Jai in analyzing the robberies of Mr.A. So, the movie begins with Jai chasing Mr. A after the initial train robbery and this happens in Mumbai and then goes to some other places before moving to Rio de Janeiro. How Jai Dixit manages to find out all the things about Mr. A? Well, watch the movie and I am pretty sure it would require a bit of 7th sense to crack the case the way Jai Dixit did. Anyway, these cinematic liberties are acceptable. How Jai manages to catch Mr.A and Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai) forms the rest of the story.
Now, for the funnier or pathetic parts:
- Screenplay by Vijay Krishna Acharya is really bad at some places. The movie is at least 30 mins long.
- There are some illogical action sequences. The chase in Mumbai was one of them. Can’t you get a police force on ground to chase the robber while he is being tracked from a Helicopter?
- Dhoom, even though it was a typical masala movie had an air of freshness about it. The way the robbers escaped, the way Jai tracks them, the production style etc. The screenplay was much better in that movie and you would atleast feel that something is going to happen. But, in this movie the plot looses momentum once the touchdown in Brazil happens. The director seems confused whether he has to build on the action sequences or the romantic sequences. Some of the sequences in the second half were unnecessary.
- The character of Bipasha Basu is totally unnecessary in the second half and only serves the purpose of distraction rather than anything else. Yeah, not much has been spent on her dressing in the second half and a couple of eyes would surely pop out the first time she appears on the scene. Even in the first half her character lacks the punch and doesn’t leave any impression. The Baywatch style sequence is pretty hilarious.
- I wonder why there are no Brazilian cops chasing the robber’s in Rio. Maybe they just aren’t up to the mark.
- If you are looking for some really good Heist sequences, then you can go to sleep once the touchdown in Brazil happens. The last robbery lacks punch. But, watch out for the robbery in Mumbai.
- Music: The lesser said about it the better it is. The original’s background score is used in a few places and it sounded much better.
- Songs: The worst thing that could have happened to the movie. Except for a couple of places in the first half (the title song and the song after the robbery in the palace), none of the other songs are needed. Songs serve as distractions and are not catchy also. The Tata Young song in the first movie still hits the charts, but none of them in the movie would even leave a mark. I think the movie would have been certainly better if all the songs are removed.
- Aishwarya Rai: She has done a pretty decent job as the thief, but lacks the acting skills for the screen time she has got. She gets more or atleast as much screen time as Hrithik or Abhishek and their performances put her to shame.

Performances:
Hrithik Roshan stands out and surely deserve full marks. Abhishek has done a good job.
Aishwarya, Bipasha and Uday are just not up to the mark. Maybe the script doesn’t do justice to their talents. And Aishwarya Rai would surely look better in normal clothes compared to what she has tried in this movie. Rimi Sen makes an unnecessary cameo.
But, inspite of all its shortcomings Dhoom 2 will most probably rake in the moolah due to the hype created and the production scale. And lastly I would say, if you are a Hrithik Roshan fan, then this movie is a must watch for you. HRITHIK is AWESOME.
